France
France is one of the most popular countries for EFL teaching in the Western European region. Jobs are widely available as there are many language schools all over the country, although Paris does offer the largest number of opportunities. Business related English courses are particularly popular in the big cities, so teachers with experience or qualifications in this field will find they have even more choice when looking for employment.
How to Find a TEFL Job in France
Finding an English language teaching job in France from outside of the country can be quite straightforward as many employers advertise their vacant positions online. However, as is usually the case in most countries, if you have a particular area in mind you are likely to find more opportunities once you arrive at your destination.
Most of the EFL teaching jobs in France are based in English language schools, although you may also find plenty of demand for private tutoring in many areas. Rates for private lessons generally range from 15 to 20 euro per session.
Teachers from within the European Union will generally find more opportunities for work than non-EU citizens, however, France is one of the easier countries in the region for non- Europeans to secure an English language teaching position. For example, American teachers may be able to take advantage of the English Teaching Assistant Program that is organised through the French Foreign Ministry.
Job Expectations in France
It is worth noting that while there is plenty of demand for the English language in France, the French people are extremely proud of their own language. Teachers who want to live and work in France are likely to find that a reasonable knowledge of French will be a distinct advantage when looking for employment, as well as for everyday life.
As previously mentioned, business related English is a good source of teaching work in France and often simply having a background in the business world may be more beneficial than possessing a TEFL qualification. However, as long as you have a university degree, a TEFL qualification and a reasonable standard of French, you should be able to find a job that suits your plans.
