Germany
Germany has long been a popular market for foreign EFL teachers due to the country’s size and economic importance within the European region. There are large numbers of language schools throughout the country that cater to a variety of markets; however, there is a particularly strong demand for teachers in the field of business related English. Teachers who possess an EU passport, a university degree and a TEFL certificate should have little trouble finding a suitable position in Germany. American passport holders also have a good chance of finding work here as Germans tend to have a preference for American style English.
How to Find a TEFL Job in Germany
If you have business English qualifications or a background in the business or IT world then you should find plenty of potential opportunities in any of the big cities throughout Germany. The simplest and most effective approach is to first decide on the area that you want to live and work in and then contact all the language schools and business centres you can find in that area directly. Don’t forget that it is important to be professional in attitude and appearance at all times and to possess an up-to-date CV/resume which you can leave with any potential employers.
If you do not have any business experience or teaching experience in general, you can still find job opportunities in the country’s smaller towns where there is generally a high demand for English teachers but much less competition. As long as you have a university degree and are willing to commit to a reasonable length of contract, then you should be able to find a suitable TEFL position.
Job Expectations in Germany
Although teacher’s salaries are generally very good in Germany, you may find that the cost of living is quite high in relation to your wage packet. If you do find that you require a little extra spending money then you should be able to increase your income by offering your services as a private English tutor. The addition of one or two private students in your spare time can often make the difference when it comes to living a comfortable lifestyle in the more expensive locations around the world.
